In the first of our series of Research Videos for 2016, Ivor Geoghegan, a Biomedical Engineering PhD candidate in the CÚRAM Centre for Research in Medical Devices, under the supervision of Dr Laoise McNamara in the Mechanobiology and Medical Device Research Group in the Discipline of Biomedical Engineering, NUI Galway, speaks about the effect of microgravity on the bone density of astronauts, and how research in this area may lead to treatments for osteoporosis.

Announcing ReelLIFE SCIENCE 2016

ReelLIFE SCIENCE is a novel science video competition for Irish primary and secondary schools, which aims to promote Science in the classroom and beyond, by inviting students to produce a short video communicating a scientific topic in an engaging and entertaining way.

Launched on Monday August 29th 2016, and supported by the Science Foundation Ireland Discover programme and the CÚRAM Centre for Research in Medical DevicesReelLIFE SCIENCE will award €3000 in prizes directly to the winning schools!  The makers of the best video at primary and secondary school level will each receive €1000, to be spent on their science programme, while second and third-placed entries at each level will receive €300 and €200, respectively.

ReelLIFE SCIENCE Video Library Launched

Happy New Year everyone. We hope you had a nice break and are looking forward to great things in 2016!

Today, we are excited to announce the launch of the ‘ReelLIFE SCIENCE Video Library‘, where you can watch more than 100 of the short science videos made by primary and secondary school students over the past number of years for ReelLIFE SCIENCE.

The videos are divided into four broad categories, to try to reflect the school science curriculum and also the range of competition topics since 2013.

These categories are:

  • Energy, Forces, Physics and Space (31 videos covering topics like Science in Space, Light, Gravity, Special Relativity, etc.);
  • Habitats and The Environment (26 videos covering topics like Science in the Garden, Our Marine World and The Soil is Alive!);
  • Our Healthy Bodies (39 videos covering a huge range of topics from Medicines, Keeping Healthy, The Food we Eat, Cells, The Digestive System, Vision, Evolution and much, much more!)
  • Science Heroes and The Power of Science (21 videos Featuring Marie Curie, Alexander Fleming, Lise Meitner, and lots of fun science experiments for the classroom).

We’d like to thank the more than 5,000 students and teachers from 178 schools all around Ireland, who have made videos for ReelLIFE SCIENCE over the years. This fantastic resource would not be possible without all of their efforts and enthusiasm.
