Debunking Common Myths of Exercise – here comes the Science bit!

In the second of our series of Research Articles for 2015,  we learn about some of the common myths of exercise from Dr. Sarah Gundy. Sarah is Project Officer for the EU funded AngioMatTrain project at CÚRAM Centre for Research in Medical Devices and she has also worked as an aerobics instructor and personal trainer in the fitness industry since 1997.

At one point in your life I bet you have said to yourself, “I really need to start doing more exercise.” The hardest part is taking the first step and doing that first workout. Alcohol Consumption: Does The Apple Fall Far From The Tree?

In the first of our series of Research Articles for 2015, BT Young Scientist and Technologists of the Year, Ian O’Sullivan and Eimear Murphy, from Colaiste Treasa in Kanturk Co. Cork, tell us about their award-winning research. They examined the influence a parent’s drinking and behaviour towards alcohol can have on their children’s drinking habits.

Apple TreeEarlier this year we won the BT Young Scientist Competition with this project on the effect that parents can have on their teenagers through their own drinking and their attitudes towards alcohol. We are in fifth year in Colaiste Treasa, Kanturk, Co. Cork. Here is a description of how we did the project and our results.

It’s Launch Day for ReelLIFE SCIENCE 2015!

This week, every primary and secondary school on the island of Ireland is invited by NUI Galway to take part in the ReelLIFE SCIENCE 2015 Schools Video Competition. We’re sending out 5,000 posters to schools, challenging teachers and students to make a fun and informative 3 minute video communicating one of this year’s topics.

Supported by the Science Foundation Ireland Discover programme and the CÚRAM Centre for Research in Medical Devices, we will award €3,000 directly to the winning schools for science promotion.
